Is VR the Future of Online Gaming?

It seems a long time since we first heard the term ‘Virtual Reality’ and we have witnessed the introduction of VR into many forms of entertainment. There was a time when virtual reality was something we could only dream of and the equipment required to deliver a virtual reality experience was simply too expensive for the average person. However, as we move through 2021 and beyond, it is easier than ever to experience a form of virtual reality.

Perhaps the most popular in terms of the number of people who have tried a similar version of VR, is at the movies. Films are now being released in the cinema in 3D, with people wearing special glasses to allow them to view the movie as if the action is taking place around them.

However, VR is more than simply sitting back and letting the action unfold around you. To quote the dictionary, VR is ‘the computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional image or environment that can be interacted with in a seemingly real or physical way by a person using special electronic equipment, such as a helmet with a screen inside or gloves fitted with sensors.’

So, already we can see why VR would be perfect for gaming but is VR the future of online gaming?

We already have access to some exciting VR equipment and games. It is possible to feel totally immersed in a fully virtual and functional environment that feels realistic. For example, you could be looking around a room and see an object fly towards you, making you move out of the way or climb up a hill and look down on the view below.

At the time of writing, there is plenty of VR equipment from which to choose including headsets, with the PSVR headset for the PlayStation 4, which launched in October 2016, selling over 5 million units. Although this did not meet the initial targets in terms of sales, it did bring virtual reality to the home thanks to the easy set-up. The PSVR headset has seen the introduction of a significant library of games and those lucky enough to test the equipment upon release could play Star Wars Battlefront Rogue One: X-Wing VR Mission. Despite this being just a 20-minute demo, it soon captured the imagination and testers were convinced VR was going to be the future of gaming.

VR Online Gaming

There has since been a long list of existing video game titles, including Skyrim, Resident Evil 7, No Man’s Sky, and Superhot to add VR experiences to the game plus VR exclusive games such as Moss, Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, Beat Saber, and Blood & Truth to come to home consoles. Many of these games are good and showcase exactly what VR can do in terms of home video gaming.

Some of these video games can be played online using VR equipment but what about other games that are based only online. The online casino industry is a good example and although the leading online casinos are extremely satisfying experiences, especially in terms of playing with real dealers, there is more to come.

We have already witnessed the introduction of several online virtual reality casinos. These allow players to move around a casino, as if they were in the room, select a game and begin playing. It is a truly mind-blowing experience and while the graphics may not always be life-like, you can quickly become immersed in the casino and forget about everything else, including the fact you are actually just sat at home.

Even when using a virtual reality online casino, you want to ensure you have the best chance of winning. This in-depth breakdown on shows you the online casino games with the lowest house edge in the United Kingdom, many of which are sure to be available in virtual reality now or in the future.

Online Gaming

As things stand right now, a great bonus can be enough to tempt a player to join an online casino for gaming. However, there will be a time when promotions alone will not be enough to tempt players and with the introduction of VR technology, players will be expecting a lot more from their online gaming experience. We are not talking about the type of VR experience we already have available becoming more widespread, we are talking about the development of the VR casino world.

This could include the opportunity to walk through Las Vegas, interact with the other people you see, walk into the casino of your choice, and begin playing a game. This may currently seem unrealistic but you only have to go back 20 years to see what technology is capable of producing in a short space of time. VR is going to be the future of online gaming and it may sound crazy right now but in 20 years’ time, you will be amazed.
