“Why would you, it’s already seeling like hotcakes!” – this is what I got when I offered to review the DJI OM 4. But why? That was the question. And the answer is easy: it does not cost much, it is convenient, lightweight, beautiful and plain cool. There will be a review. Just because.
And so it makes no sense for me to talk about its exact characteristics, because the reason for the popularity of the stabilizer is not there.
The main feature is the mechanics of the stabilizer itself. The DJI OM 4 is revolutionary in that it solves the main problem of stabilizers – setup time.
And yes, many of you are accustomed to this and no longer pay attention to the time from 30 seconds to one and a half minutes that you spend on setting up the stub for work.
Some time ago THIS issue made me stop using stabilizers. I had a stub for a smartphone, I had a stub for a camera, and both of those stubs were… good in their own way.
But they absolutely did not justify the time it took to install the device. Especially when the stub was buggy, and both were buggy quite often. And this increased the setup time even more, because sometimes everything had to be started from the beginning.
AND! Of course, if you needed to use your smartphone not just as a camera tool, then the installation time increased and more. And the whole idea was losing its already minimum sense.
The DJI OM 4 lets you fit a magnet clip onto your smartphone. A VERY STRONG magnet. And this clamp is attached to the stabilizer in a second.
Moreover, in order to align the smartphone in the stub once and forever it is enough to attach a ring to the back of the smartphone.
The box includes things to make the process easier. There’s a lot of stuff here, actually!
What helps is a blister with a balancer – however, I did not quite understand if this is a universal case, since the blister is centered, but the center of gravity of various smartphones is very different.
What important is this. It takes a second to install a smartphone. And it takes the same amount for REMOVAL! Waste of time is minimized and is close to zero.
It also helps that the DJI OM 4 is comfortable, compact, lightweight and very neat. Does this miracle have any drawbacks? Yes, sure. It costs about $175.
It is two-axis, with the most basic set of functions, some of which are implemented EXCLUSIVELY through the proprietary DJI application.
And this proprietary application in my case suffered from the main trouble of the Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra. It can only shoot 4K/30 frames maximum. And surprisingly on the LG V50 ThinQ, the peak shooting resolution is only FHD, although the native application also supports 4K 60FPS with HDR.
8K is not supported, so it makes sense to use the stub only when using a standard Samsung camera. And yes, 8K stabilization with physical stabilization is not bad. Not perfect, but very good.
And in this mode the stub allows you to use the power button, a single press on which flips the smartphone from portrait to landscape mode, and vice versa.
A triple press will put the stabilizer into standby mode, and will allow you to remove the smartphone without disconnecting it and install it back, if necessary.
You can use the stick to control the rotation, and with a fairly high sensitivity, although you need to get used to it. And the trigger is used to fix the smartphone in place.
The shutter button and side zoom slider are NOT used. And since we’re talking about the location of stuff, the DJI OM 4 is charged via the side Type-C connector.
Working time in PERFECT conditions is about 15 hours. But we live in conditions that are far from ideal, so count on 10-11 hours, which is still very good.
It charges in 2.5 hours from a 10-watt adapter.
The biggest achievement of today’s hero is improving the worst things about the other stabilizers while maintaining a low price and a bunch of interesting useful features. And what issues the DJI OM 4 has depends on the smartphone. So yes, I wholheartedly recommend it!
