Journey Loc8 Passport Finder Wallet Review: Finally, A Wallet I Can Charge

A wallet is something everybody has, but what are the main features of a wallet? It should be long-lasting, convenient, and made from quality materials. It should fit my cards, look good, and maybe have RFID-blocking technology. And that is it, basically. But Journey — known for their fantastic accessories for laptops and tablets — went a bit further and made a smart wallet that you can add to Apple’s Find Me app. And that’s… actually a great idea. But let’s take a closer look.

Design

The design here is simple: grey and black colours, two pages that fit five cards, and even a place for a pen. The size is 239mm x 155mm x 3mm unfolded and 117mm x 155mm x 6.5mm folded. There’s also a spot for a passport, a boarding pass pocket, and a hidden money pouch that’s so well-hidden that I only found it after three weeks.

The wallet is mostly made out of vegan leather. Surprisingly, despite it having a battery inside, it’s very thin. You might never even guess that it has a tracker inside.

Thanks to the RFID technology your cards’ data is protected.

I like how it looks, even though the black cover is a fingerprint magnet. It’s not too bad, and you can easily wash them away.

Apple Find My feature

Journey is known for its Apple-centric accessories, and the LOC8 Passport Finder Wallet is perfect if you have an iPhone. If not — well, it’s probably not worth buying it, since all Android users lose access to the main feature.

The wallet is easy to connect with your phone, after which it appears in the Find My app for any Apple device. The process takes seconds, and the battery is good for about six months. To be honest with you, I never expected to own a wallet that needs recharging, but there we are. The charging port is hidden well and uses a proprietary charger.

Requiring proprietary chargers in 2024 is a sin, but in this case, I can understand it — the ports are just too thin for the conventional Type-C charger. Still, it’s a bit weird not to add wireless charging — the form factor seems perfect. Then I could have charged it with Journey’s own charging pad.

There are two ways to find the wallet: via the Find Me app that shows its location and thanks to the (fairly loud) sound chime it emits when it’s close.

Verdict

Losing a wallet is in my top five phobias, so tracking it sounds like a perfect way to ease some of those fears. Like the other products from Journey, the Journey Loc8 Passport Finder Wallet looks good, works as intended and costs a pretty penny — $109.99 CAD, to be exact. Is it worth the money? That’s up to you.
