London-based design studio Blond presented the concept of a folding charger designed to solve the growing problem of electronic waste in the technology industry. And today the studio was happy to announce that the device was shortlisted for the prestigious Design Week Awards 2022 in the category “Product Design – Industrial”.
Fold is positioned as an adapted alternative to traditional chargers, which allows you to charge three products at once. The device, which is a configured series of housings and mats, charges without wires, it only needs to be connected to a power source. Each product will come with a mini-screwdriver so that users can change the parts themselves.
The packaging is designed so that people can return parts and get new ones, it has compartments to accommodate broken or outdated systems. The replacement can be sent back in the same package. The body of the device is either translucent or transparent. This is for consumers to have a better view of what is actually inside the product. “We designed Fold to explore how the tech world can create more sustainable products while also raising awareness of the environmental impact of electronics.” the team said.
If the product is launched into mass production, it will always be possible to use opaque color solutions (which may be more to the taste of consumers), but at this stage the transparent material helps to convey the idea to the consumer.
Although Fold is a concept, the design team has figured out what needs to be done to make it a reality. Although the process of developing the final design will take at least a year, the founder and creative director of Blond, James Melia, notes that every part of the product can be produced right now.
The support from a well-known brand will definitely be needed, the designer explains. He adds: “It’s a long process, but it was designed with production in mind.”
