Ukrainians have developed the Kronos submarine that fires torpedoes

The company Highland Systems, founded by Ukrainian specialists, presented a prototype of the unmanned underwater vehicle Kronos at the IDEX-2023 exhibition in the United Arab Emirates. This vessel can perform various tasks both with and without a crew.

Kronos has already attracted interest from both military and civilian companies. One of the developers, Alexander Kuznetsov, shared details about the development process.

Characteristics of the Kronos submarine:

  • speed under water – 50 km/h
  • speed on water – 80 km/h
  • working depth – 100 meters
  • maximum critical depth – 250 meters
  • time the boat is underwater: 54 hours in hybrid mode, 36 hours from the battery, 18 hours in generator mode
  • width – 7.4 m
  • length – 9 m
  • height – 2.2 m

Thanks to built-in sonars, radars, communication systems, night vision cameras, 360-degree view cameras, and an electronic periscope, Kronos can conduct patrols, reconnaissance, evacuation, and engage in enemy attacks.

The vessel moves with an electric motor at speeds of up to 50 km/h, akin to an aircraft on underwater “wings.” It is maneuverable, capable of moving left and right, as well as rotating around its axis.

Thanks to its composite hull and hydrodynamic shape, the vessel moves almost silently and absorbs radar signals, remaining undetectable to sonars and echo sounders.

Kronos can operate on a single charge for up to 54 hours and cover distances of up to 1000 km. The electric motor is powered by powerful batteries, generators, and a compressor for air supply to the crew during resurfacing.

The company’s CEO also mentioned that they plan to soon launch small-scale production of Kronos vessels, considering it “economically viable.” The ready-made units will be shipped to customers after completing all necessary tests.
