Netflix enables Spatial audio for everyone: supported shows and movies

Netflix announced the introduction of spatial audio to all devices to improve listening quality of the entire catalog of original content. Currently, content that supports spatial audio includes the fourth season of Stranger Things, The Adam Project, Red Notice, The Witcher, Locke & Key, and more.

Users can type “Spatial Audio” into the Netflix search bar to find all movies and TV shows that support this option. The number of movies that support surround sound will depend on the streaming device. This means that users of devices that don’t normally support spatial audio can now use it. In addition, all subscribers, regardless of their Netflix subscription plan, will be able to use surround sound.

Netflix has licensed Sennheiser’s AMBEO technology to transmit surround audio through any 2-channel stereo equipment, providing 3D positional audio without the need for additional surround speakers or home theater equipment. The goal of AMBEO is to provide “improved audio experience wherever stereo is delivered today, be it standard TV sets, stereo systems, headphones, tablets, or laptops,” Sennheiser said in a statement.

For users watching movies on an iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV, Netflix says that streaming quality must be set to “High” or “Auto” to view content compatible with spatial audio.

It should also be noted that for those who already have Apple devices with surround sound support – such as third-generation AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max and Beats Fit Pro – nothing will change, as surround sound support is already available there.
