Samsung Electronics will develop a new in-house mobile processor that will be used exclusively in the flagship Galaxy smartphone series.
The design of the new SoC is scheduled to be completed by 2023, and from 2025 – it will be installed in smartphones. This SoC will be capable of running a mobile operating system. It will be recalled that Samsung is purchasing Qualcomm and MediaTek processors for its mobile devices. In addition, it has its own line of Exynos SoC’s, which it uses in some models of its own smartphones. Earlier this year, the company introduced the flagship 4nm SoC Exynos 2200, which became the basis for the flagship Galaxy S22 series.
According to sources in The Korea Economic Daily, this new Samsung SoC will be used solely in flagship smartphones, while Exynos will remain only in mid-, and entry-level smartphones.
The company was able to decide to develop a completely new SoC for its flagship devices because of Exynos’ reputation, which has been seriously shaken, along with the devices based on it. According to the publication, about 2,000 buyers of the Galaxy S22 decided to file a class action lawsuit against Samsung last month. Users have accused the Samsung’s Game Optimizing Service (GOS) in artificial reduction of the performance in about 10,000 different applications, including games, which was confirmed by tests. In response, Samsung claims that GOS is used only to effectively control the temperature of the device and avoid overheating, while maintaining maximum gaming performance. However, the buyers were not convinced and they decided to prove their case in court.
According to sources, “after the incident, Samsung decided to start developing a new SoC for its flagship smartphones, which will be free of technological shortcomings and help the company strengthen its presence in the mobile chipset market.”
It should be noted, that according to Strategy Analytics, in 2021 the share of Samsung SoC’s in mobile devices was 6.6%. The first three places were shared by Qualcomm, MediaTek and Apple, which accounted for 37.7%, 26.3% and 26% of the market, respectively. At the same time, in 2019 global market share of the South Korean giant mobile SoC’s was 14%. The development of the company’s new flagship mobile SoC is part of the company’s goal to catch up and overtake Apple in building its own technology ecosystem. Although the Korean giant is overtaking Apple in terms of supply, in the amount of money earned, the “apple producer” still leads.
