A few days ago in Russia it became known that GitHub locally blocked dozens of accounts. Among them you can see the accounts of Sberbank, Alfa-Bank and other companies, as well as individual developers.
All the blockings are related to sanctions imposed against the aggressor country. Game developer Serhiy Bobrov was among the blocked accounts.
By the way, when GitHub blocks a personal account, it receives a suspension flag. In addition, when you block a corporate account, access to repository data can be maintained for a couple of hours. When GitHub blocks a personal account, users instantly lose access to it.
Some users have received emails stating that they cannot manage their accounts from the sanctioned region. Users should fill out an appeal when following the links inside the email.
“GitHub’s vision is to be a home for all developers, wherever they may be. We take seriously our commitments to government mandates, which include adhering to new strict export control rules aimed at severely restricting Russia’s access to technology and other items needed to sustain its aggressive military capabilities. We are also serious about our responsibility to carefully study government mandates to ensure that users and customers are not harmed. This includes protecting open cooperation and the free flow of information in our interconnected community to support communication, humanitarian action and change.”
