Sea of Thieves passed the mark of 40 million players on the eve of its release on PS5

The pirate adventure game Sea of Thieves from Rare has become a real hit for the Microsoft gaming ecosystem. Launched in 2018, the game has gradually won over millions of players on Xbox consoles and PCs over the years. Now, six years after the release of the game, their number has reached a whopping 40 million.

According to today’s announcement, the game’s 40 million players are split between Xbox consoles, the Microsoft Store on PC, and Steam. The game’s executive producer, Joe Neat, commented on the event as follows:

I’m sure you can imagine that when it comes to Sea of Thieves, my days are filled with numbers. Development costs, active servers, days until the next update… Sometimes, however, some really extraordinary numbers stand out – like 40 million, and I’m incredibly happy to report that this is the number of pirates who have already set sail in Sea of Thieves!

To celebrate, the studio is kicking off the Gold & Glory Weekend from April 19th to the 22nd, during which Reputation, Gold, Seasonal Popularity, Loyalty, and Guild Reputation will all increase in-game.

Since its launch, the game has been receiving free updates with a huge amount of content, adding new threats, regions, entire quest lines (including a cross between Pirates of the Caribbean and Monkey Island), technological advancements and more. The 12th season is just around the corner, which will feature throwing knives, a new version of the cannonball, lightning and much more.

Rare is also preparing to welcome Sony PlayStation players to its oceans for the first time. “I’m also excited about the opportunity to expand our community even further, as we’re just days away from launch on PlayStation 5, and we’ll be introducing a whole galaxy of new pirates to our shared world,” added Neat. “The positivity and excitement coming out of our closed beta was contagious, and I can’t wait to see even more fresh faces join us starting next week.”

Sea of Thieves is currently available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, Game Pass, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. The PlayStation 5 version will be released on April 30th, and judging by the beta version available to pre-order players, it looks like the game will be a real hit on the platform.
