US special services seized Russian botnet

The good news came from overseas. US cyber specialists have managed to seize control of a large bot network controlled by the Russian government. A so-called botnet, or in other words a computer network that is infected with malicious software, could have been used to carry out cyberattacks.

According to FBI Director Christopher Wray, the botnet was controlled by Russia’s military intelligence unit, the GRU, known for its devastating cyberattacks, such as the 2015 and 2016 hacks that cut off power in Ukraine. Botnets have many potential uses, from disabling websites to destructive hacks that render computers unusable. Christopher Wray did not specify the type of threat eliminated, the only thing he mentioned was that the network was scattered around the world and numbered thousands of infected computers.

US intelligence has long monitored cybercriminals from Russia, but increased their efforts after the beginning of the active invasion of Russian troops into the territory of sovereign Ukraine.
