See if your Apple Watch will support WatchOS 9

Obviously, not all current Apple Watch models will be able to run the new watchOS 9. We now know a list of all models that can be updated to the new software when it will be released.

The new version of Apple Watch software, watchOS 9, was widely demonstrated at WWDC 2022. You may be wondering: “Can I upgrade to the new platform when it becomes available?” Thankfully, you don’t have to wait until the fall of 2022 to find this out. As Apple released the full list of supported models shortly after the WWDC keynote.

WatchOS 9 supported models:

  • Apple Watch Series 4
  • Apple Watch Series 5
  • Apple Watch Series 6
  • Apple Watch Series 7
  • Apple Watch SE

We’ll probably get at least one more Apple Watch added to this list in the fall, and you can be sure that Apple Watch Series 8 (or whatever the final name may be) will come with Watch OS 9 out-of-the-box.

Apple Watch Series 7

While Apple Watch Series 3 is still being sold alongside much newer watches, its absence from the supported models’ list hints to us that it will finally be put to rest with the fall launch event. So, if you’ve been holding on to Series 3, now is probably the time to start looking for the newer model, because it won’t support the latest operating system.
