You know, I wasn’t even planning to make this article, because I was busy with completely different things and came across the news about the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2 quite by accident. However, I’m a person who almost bought a Blackmagic 6K body without a kit instead of 4K with the kit, and pondered on 6K much longer than I agreed on the actual purchase.
In short, I wanted 6K. And now I’ll be wanting 6K G2. Because, judging by the announcement and data from the official page, it it going to be, in fact, the same Blackmagic 6K Pro, but without ND-filters inside and $ 500 cheaper. That is, $ 2000. 6K Pro is, respectively, $ 2500. Well, and BMPCC4K is $ 1300. Review coming soon.
We get Blackmagic 6K, but with a rotating screen, maybe even 1500 nits, like the 6K Pro. And it’s absolutely certain that there will be a connector for the viewfinder, just like in the 6K Pro, and the ability to use NP-F570 batteries, not Sony’s LP-E6.
And this means the increase in battery capacity by 75%, 3500 mAh against 2000 mAh maximum. In addition, there is a chance of a 570 in the DuraPro USB 750 format, with two USBs directly in the case. Which can in theory replace the dummy and power the camera via USB, not through the Weipu SF610 / s2, as it goes now.
Everything else, including the Super 35 sensor, dimensions and capabilities, should be the same as in 6K Pro. Again, except for ND filters.
And if you think it’s a very, very strange release that doesn’t change anything at all, then it’s not. The fact is that there were very few reasons to buy a regular Pocket Cinema Camera 6K.
The price was higher, the advantages of the sensor against BMPCC4K were offset by the small battery, because the sensor eats more energy, and the battery comes from the 4K model. In addition, the EF mount did not allow the use of speed boosters.
This all became noticeable, of course, with the release of the Blackmagic 6K Pro, where the price was a little higher, but there was everything I ever wanted from 6K. Therefore, people most often bought either 4K or 6K Pro. And I’m sure that the release of 6K G2 will change the trend very much.
In fact, according to the information on the site, Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2 will replace the current model. That is, for the same money you get 90% of Blackmagic 6K Pro features just like that. For those who have bought 6K now, this is sad news. But for everyone else – even very good.
