Logitech G604 Lightspeed review. Gaming mouse of the new generation

Let’s talk about Logitech G604 Lightspeed. The mouse, which logically should be the heir to the previous G603 model. But if you own G603, then in G604 you will find anything but the heir. And it is true. Fortunately, G604 has its redeeming qualities. And a lot of them.

Market positioning

Logitech G604 Lightspeed better not to go off the path outlined by its predecessor – otherwise its price of $110 simply wouldn’t seem justified. We’re talking highest price segment here, where one mistake costs you a lot.

In addition, there is also MX Master 3, which, although it costs a little more, is significantly more universal in operation.

Where to buy

What’s in the box

However, back to G604. The package includes Logitech G604 Lightspeed itself, a receiver, a battery, a set of instructions, a Logitech G sticker, and a cable.

But the cable is not ordinary. This is essentially a USB extension cable that makes the process of installing a receiver in your computer easier. In addition, the closer the wireless adapter to the mouse during operation, the more reliable the connection.

However, the lack of a second cable, microUSB/Type-C hints at one fact. The mouse does not know how to recharge the battery, and works exclusively on batteries. I’m thinking about reviewing a couple of AA/AAA batteries with USB charging, and they should theoretically work fine with the device. In extreme cases, Panasonic Eneloop batteries can help you.

Appearance

Visually, the rodent, as already mentioned, does not look like the heir to the G603. But it’s suspiciously similar to the more flagship G502 model.

The shape of the case is the same – for righties, with a protrusion under the thumb on the left. Two buttons at the top left of the left main button. Two buttons under the wheel, one for changing the mode of operation of the wheel.

Three-mode wheel – with vertical scrolling step by step, vertical scrolling without friction, and with the possibility of tilting it left and right to provide additional functionality.

On the left side we have not two, or even three additional buttons, but as many as six!

The lid is visible on the back of the case; remove it, and you’ll get access to the receiver and battery. The receiver is not Unifying, unfortunately, but works at a frequency of 2.4 GHz with the proprietary Logitech Lightspeed technology; it provides a minimum signal delay of only 1 ms. For a wireless mouse, this is the maximum – for a wired mouse as well, since less than 1 ms is not supported by the USB cable.

Below is an optical sensor, a power switch and four identical-shaped vinyl legs. It’s nice that they are interchangeable, but finding them on sale will be extremely difficult, and there are no spared in the box. It’s a shame.

Materials and usability

The mouse case is made of a nice, slightly rough plastic. There is almost no gloss, only a strip in which the wheel is embedded in the front. The wheel is heavy, metal, very pleasant to the touch and scrolls with solid inertia. It’s great, really.

The mouse looks like it should feel great in hand. But no, my thumb squeezes the rodent at critical moments so that one of the six side buttons, the G5 button, gets accidentally pressed. And since in some games this button has the “on your face” function, it periodically transported my avatar to the other dimension.

Specifications

Dimensions of the mouse – 130 x 80 x 45 mm, weight is 135 g with battery. The sensor is a branded Hero 16K, DPI – from 100 to 16,000. The values of smoothing, filtering and acceleration are zero, the maximum acceleration is 40 G, the maximum speed is 10 m/s.

The USB data format is 16 bits per axis, the speed is 1 ms, for Bluetooth – from 7.5 ms to 11.25 ms (88 – 133 Hz). There is also a processor, an unnamed 32-bit ARM.

The declared endurance of Teflon legs is up to 250 km. When using Lightspeed, the battery should survive up to 240 hours, when using Bluetooth – almost 4,000 hours, or 5 and a half months. The warranty, by the way, is 2 years.

Software

To work with the mouse, you should install the Logitech G Hub application on your PC – try here. There, a brief introductory instruction explains both the principle of operation/activating Lightspeed, and the purpose of the button to switch the wheel mode, and much more.

The main thing here is setting of the buttons. Since G604 has six of them, plus, of course, the ability to switch the profile via G-Shift, customizing the rodent for yourself is a must.

There are a lot of functions: five tabs with 15-20 functions in the smallest case. What I never found was the functionality of gestures from MX Master 3, so if anyone needs them, try different mouse.

Also in the G Hub, you can change the DPI settings in a separate window. Moreover, steps can be added or removed. The polling rate can also be set up here, by the way.

Modes

The Logitech G604 Lightspeed has the ability to connect to two devices at the same time – via the receiver or Bluetooth. To enter the Bluetooth search mode, you need to hold down the Lightspeed button (under the wheel button) for 5 seconds, until it flashes blue. Next – go to the settings of the laptop/smartphone/tablet, look for the mouse and connect to it.

Switching between modes takes place by holding down the same Lightspeed button – longer than 0.2 seconds, but no more than 5 seconds. Unfortunately, it is impossible to connect to three or more devices – for this, again, try MX Master 3.

I will not lie if I say that Logitech G604 Lightspeed is universal. With it I completed a couple of Dusk levels on Ciero Mieto, on Alt-Tab I wrote a couple of paragraphs of this article, and I checked the mail on my smartphone. The Hero 16K sensor is enough for me for any game, the mouse is weighty, it glides perfectly, like a skater on ice.

It’s nice that the G604 also has a dual-mode wheel – another advantage of the new product compared to G603. In addition, the “gear” mode is not as jelly-like as in MX Master 3, but it feels reliable.

Disadvantages

One thing bothers me is that something is rattling inside the case, as if a cog was lost. And no, this is not a wheel or buttons, I fixed them and shook the case, which did not stop the rattling.

Also, the wheel is slightly springy when raising and sharply lowering the mouse on the pad – this is almost not noticeable when working with headphones, and is explained by the dual-mode of this wheel itself. Just keep it in mind.

So, what is missing? Nothing, essentially. I do not need PowerPlay support, I have a huge pad, and I do not need another one. Variable weight is also useful to someone, but it’s fine for me, especially since Logitech has models with variable weight, like G502, although it costs more. At least its wireless option.

What might not be enough for you? Probably RGB. Which G604 does not have in any form.

Logitech G604 Lightspeed Verdict

Whatever you do, no matter how much you work and no matter how many hours you spend gaming. I think if you have no more than two devices, you do not count on wired connection and do not expect an RGB mouse, then Logitech G604 Lightspeed will suit you just fine. Universality is its alpha and omega, and even if it’s pricey. If you need a universal mouse, I can safely recommend Logitech G604 Lightspeed.
