Israeli missile warning system to be tested in Kyiv

Next month, the command of the Israeli Defence Forces will deploy an early warning system in Kyiv to detect incoming Russian missiles. If the pilot programme proves successful, it will be extended to other Ukrainian cities.

The Walla, citing its sources among Ukrainian and Israeli officials, reported that Israeli Defence Forces officers met several times in Poland with Ukrainian officers to negotiate the deployment of a system similar to that used in Israel.

However, unlike Israel, Ukraine plans to deploy a system that will only alert about missile attacks, but not intercept them. Ukraine has asked Jerusalem to provide it with missile interception capabilities, but Israel’s leadership has so far refused to do so in order to avoid an excessive confrontation with Russia. So far, it is one of the few countries that maintains relatively good relations with both Ukraine and Russia.

During the meetings, the military discussed the need to improve the system, noting that Ukraine is much larger than Israel and could be attacked with more advanced missiles. The system will first be deployed in Kyiv, and if successful, it will be extended to other Ukrainian cities, and should be operational by summer.

Israel’s warning system uses a combination of radar and electro-optical devices to detect rocket, missile and UAV launches, classify the size and threat they pose, and pinpoint areas in danger on a map. Residents of areas at risk are then warned through sirens, phone alerts and TV and radio messages.

The system has saved hundreds of lives in Israel over the years, and in recent years its accuracy has been improved and it can even limit alerts to specific areas of large cities.

Also, officials responsible for international projects of the Shiba Medical Center met with Mayor Vitali Klitschko in Kyiv. Shiba representatives are considering the possibility of training local specialists in physical and psychological rehabilitation, which would be especially useful for soldiers. Also, according to the Ambassador of Israel to Ukraine, Mikhail Brodsky, there is a possibility that a separate Israeli rehabilitation centre will appear in Ukraine in the future.
