Rheinmetall plans to produce tanks and air defence systems in Ukraine

Germany’s largest arms manufacturer Rheinmetall believes that everything is going to make it possible to produce tanks, air defence equipment and ammunition in Ukraine in the future.

According to Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger in an interview with the German newspaper Handelsblatt, the company is currently trying to conclude a number of cooperation and joint venture agreements with Ukrainian companies. The deals are expected to be signed in the next few weeks, with investment in the new plants coming from the Ukrainian state.

This includes the creation of joint ventures that will manufacture automotive systems, air defence systems and ammunition. “In this way, we are enabling Ukraine to be able to defend itself in the medium and long term,” says Armin Papperger.

The Rheinmetall CEO recalled the plan to build a plant to produce Panther main battle tanks, which was first discussed about 2 months ago. According to Rheinmetall’s plans, it could produce up to 400 tanks a year. This can be an example of cooperation, and now, according to Armin Papperger, negotiations between Rheinmetall and the Ukrainian authorities on the tank project look promising.

Just as the Lynx BMP is being built at a plant in Hungary, “our newly developed Panther main battle tank can roll off the assembly line at a Ukrainian plant in a similar way,” says Rheinmetall’s CEO. “Moreover, the demand for equipment from Ukraine will be very high over the next ten years.

The manufacturer is currently on a growth path, and this is due, among other things, to the increase in global demand for arms amid the war in Ukraine. The company’s CEO said that they have very large capacities for the production of tank ammunition and artillery. For example, the company’s enterprises currently produce 150,000 shells for tanks.
