In this review, we take a closer look at the FiiO BT11, a compact yet capable audio transmitter designed to enhance Bluetooth audio quality. Positioned as an affordable solution, the BT11 addresses common limitations in Bluetooth codec support, making it a valuable tool for users seeking high-resolution audio on devices like iPhones or USB-C-equipped hardware.

Lossless for everyone

The BT11 stands out for its broad compatibility with advanced audio codecs, supporting up to 96kHz/24-bit wireless audio. Among the supported codecs are aptX HD, aptX Lossless, aptX Adaptive, aptX LL, and Sony LDAC, among others. This extensive codec range ensures that the device delivers superior audio quality, accommodating diverse user preferences and device ecosystems.

With the BT11, FiiO has introduced an accessible option for audiophiles and casual listeners who might use a phone without support for lossless sound. Now there is a way, but… does it work?

The FiiO BT11 presents itself as a highly capable yet compact Bluetooth audio transmitter, but it comes with a range of usability issues that could frustrate even tech-savvy users. Alongside the device itself, you’ll find a prominent yellow card urging you to watch a tutorial video — a clear indication of some bugs that still need fixing. The video highlights common user difficulties, such as pairing the BT11 with the FiiO Control app and reconnecting to the dongle after an initial successful pairing.

One significant design flaw is the apparent dependency on the FiiO Control app for pairing. The app pairs with the dongle via Bluetooth, but this process is not intuitive. Adding to the confusion, the dongle defaults to “pairing mode off” after app setup, potentially leaving users unable to connect without first engaging the app. This design choice raises questions about usability, as a device of this nature should ideally offer seamless operation without a mandatory app.

Playback and Sound Quality

A notable drawback is the sound distortion and audio cutouts experienced during the first 30 seconds of playback after pairing headphones with the dongle. While the issue resolves itself, it detracts from the otherwise high-resolution audio experience the BT11 aims to deliver.

The device supports advanced codecs like LDAC, but its LED indicators can create ambiguity. For example, while LDAC is selected in the app settings, the dongle may display a light color associated with another codec (e.g., adaptive aptX). This lack of clarity undermines user confidence in codec selection.

Intermittent audio stuttering is another drawback, occurring unpredictably regardless of the music file’s quality or resolution. These interruptions are particularly noticeable during prolonged use, ranging from occasional disruptions to frequent disturbances, which can severely impact the listening experience.

Reconnecting the BT11 to a phone after using it with headphones can be problematic. If the headphones are disconnected mid-use or noise cancellation is activated via their proprietary app, the BT11 may struggle to re-establish a connection. This issue means you sometimes have to fix it yourself. Ensuring a specific sequence—turning off the headphones before unplugging the transmitter—seems to minimize connection issues.

On the positive side, the BT11’s small size is a practical advantage. It integrates well with devices like the iPhone 15 Pro Max without being obtrusive. Firmware updates via the FiiO app are straightforward and quick, though they require Wi-Fi and may take up to 10 minutes. And the sound is excellent and an obvious improvement on some devices.

Verdict

While the FiiO BT11 offers impressive codec support and compact design, its operational quirks and connectivity issues may detract from its appeal. Sound stuttering, reliance on the app for pairing, and ambiguous codec feedback make it less user-friendly than expected. For those willing to navigate these hurdles, the BT11 can deliver high-resolution audio.
