FiiO JD1 review: You can’t beat this price

-

The FiiO JD1 is a promising entry-level in-ear monitor that gets the job done and costs comically little. Featuring a 10mm LCP dynamic driver, asymmetrical magnetic circuits, and a sleek design, the JD1 promises to impress despite its meagre price. Let’s see how good these can sound for $14.99.

FiiO JD1 review: You can’t beat this price

The FiiO JD1 features a 10mm liquid crystal polymer (LCP) dynamic driver, which is a common driver type used in many IEMs. It has 0.78mm 2-pin connectors. Despite the substantial driver, the FiiO JD1 is quite lightweight at only 7 grams per unit, making it a comfortable in-ear monitor.

The FiiO JD1 is priced at an extremely affordable $14.99. This low price point is likely achieved through the use of a single 10mm liquid crystal polymer dynamic driver, a common and cost-effective driver type.

Design

I have to say, the FiiO JD1 sure is a nice-looking model. For the price, it’s downright gorgeous with it’s see-through design and what feels like a high-quality plastic. I’ve used some earbuds that scream “cheap” and this isn’t it. It’s very impressive — and light, but that lightness does not cheapen the feel.

FiiO JD1 review: You can’t beat this price

I usually don’t praise FiiO for outstanding design but these IEMs were made in collaboration with JadeAudio, and it shows. You can definitely recognize their touch. In fact, it’s easy to confuse these with JadeAudio products since there’s no mention of FiiO anywhere on the buds — only the JadeAudio logo.

The stock cable is also quite a looker. It’s a very stylish package.

Sound

The FiiO JD1 IEMs have a sound signature dominated by their powerful bass. This low-end emphasis results in significant bass bloat and bleed that muddies the midrange, making vocals sound dirty and lacking in clarity.

The midrange is thin and lacks body, while the treble is unimpressive, with an unnatural tone. Like expected, there was no miracle: while the design is excellent, the sound could not be masked. These sound like an excellent pair of affordable IEMs, but they are still very cheap, and their sound reminds me of that. But is it bad? Outright bad? Not at all. I have to remind you that these cost $14.99. And for that, these are mighty impressive.

While the FiiO JD1’s sound signature is dominated by its powerful, plentiful bass, its performance has some qualities. The low-end provides an impressively impactful and substantial listening experience, especially considering the small form factor. Additionally, the FiiO JD1 avoids any issues with sibilance or harsh treble. Perhaps most surprisingly, despite the overwhelming bass presence, the vocals remain relatively clear. Very respectable performance.

Verdict

Music fans seeking a budget-friendly solution with robust bass performance need look no further than the FiiO JD1 IEMs. These earphones deliver exceptional value, exceeding the typical sound quality found in this price range.
