AMD announced that Sony Semiconductor Solutions (SSS) has selected its advanced adaptive computing technology for its next-generation LiDAR reference system. SSS is a world leader in image sensors, so they have joined forces with AMD to create a powerful LiDAR solution that can be used in autonomous vehicles.
Using AMD’s adaptive computing technology will extend SSS’s LiDAR system capabilities and offer extreme accuracy, fast data processing and high reliability for next-generation autonomous driving systems.
According to the company’s press service, LiDAR plays an important role in providing depth perception and environment mapping for both automated driving and safety applications. Also, thanks to artificial intelligence, LiDAR provides data on the classification, segmentation and detection of objects for 3D perception, which cannot be provided by cameras alone, especially in conditions of low light or adverse weather.
“LiDAR technology, with its AI-enhanced sensing capabilities, is developing at an incredible pace, allowing it to be deployed for an ever-increasing number of applications,” says AMD. “Our collaboration with Sony Semiconductor Solutions, which is adding AMD’s adaptive computing technology to its LiDAR project, demonstrates our commitment to push the boundaries of technology and drive innovation in mission-critical industries.”
“This collaboration with AMD is a significant step forward in our quest to create advanced solutions for LiDAR applications,” said Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation.
The SSS LiDAR reference project with the IMX459 sensor based on AMD Zynq UltraScale+ and Artix-7 adaptive chipsets provides automakers and automotive equipment suppliers with a comprehensive perception platform that allows them to navigate complex driving scenarios and accurately detect potential hazards. The updated reference system leverages the company’s expertise in developing scalable and adaptive computing solutions to optimize the computing capabilities of SPAD ToF SSS depth sensors.
This ensures high accuracy, fast data processing and excellent reliability, which meets the growing requirements of the automotive industry. The joint efforts of SSS and AMD will accelerate the adoption of LiDAR technology in various industries, opening up new opportunities for autonomous systems.
