Apple iMessage might not be forced to be interoperable by the EU

-

The EU has recently been intensifying their efforts to make gatekeeper apps like Apple iMessage interoperable. But recent reports point out that this effort from the EU might not affect Apple’s messaging service like it was originally meant to. As it turns out, this messaging service might not be a popular option among businesses, hence not considered a gatekeeper app under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

This means that Apple iMessage might not have to open up its services to their Android counterparts. Originally, when the EU started pushing for making gatekeeper apps like iMessage interoperable, it meant only one thing. That one thing is that Android users will finally be able to break the barrier they face while texting their friends who use iPhones.

For quite a while now, Google has been intensifying its efforts to pressure Apple to adopt the RCS messaging channel. This is a more secure way to text between devices and is much better than SMS or MMS which Apple forces on Android devices. Due to Apple limiting Android devices to SMS and MMS messaging channels, messages are unsafe and lack some essential features.

This is the entire concept of the Blue bubble Green bubble saga between iPhones and Android devices. Well after initial pressure from the EU to make iMessage interoperable, Apple announced that they’ll adopt the RCS messaging channel next year. Google alongside a ton of Android fans and users around the world celebrated this announcement, which was a tough one for Apple to make.

But with reports that the EU might be reconsidering forcing Apple to be interoperable, there are some worries. Will Apple walk back on their words and refrain from adopting the RCS messaging channel by next year? At this point, it’s hard to tell whether the EU will hold back from making Apple iMessage interoperable or the tech giant’s follow-up action.
