Apple is in talks with OpenAI to create a chatbot for the iPhone

-

Apple has resumed talks with OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, to develop some artificial intelligence features that will appear in iOS 18, according to a new report from Bloomberg. Apple is also building its large language models for some iOS 18 features, but its talks with OpenAI are focused on a “chatbot/search component,” according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman.

The tech giant is also reportedly in talks with Google to license Gemini, Google’s own AI chatbot, for iOS 18. Bloomberg reports that those talks are still ongoing and could go either way, as Apple has yet to make the final decision about which company’s technology to use. It’s possible, Gurman says, that Apple could end up licensing AI technology from both companies or neither.

So far, Apple hasn’t talked too much about its AI efforts, although the rest of Silicon Valley has jumped into the AI race. But she’s dropped enough hints that she’s up to something. When the company announced its earnings in February, CEO Tim Cook said that Apple continues to work and invest in artificial intelligence and “will be excited to share details of our ongoing work in this area later this year.”

The company claims that the new MacBook Air M3, which it unveiled last month, is “the world’s best consumer laptop with artificial intelligence” and will reportedly start releasing laptops and desktops with artificial intelligence later this year. Earlier this week, Apple also released several open-source models for major languages that are designed to run locally on devices rather than in the cloud.

It is not yet clear what AI features will look like in the iPhone and other Apple devices. Generative AI is still considered unreliable and prone to inventing answers. Recent AI gadgets like the Humane Ai Pin have received disastrous reviews, while others like the Rabbit R1 have yet to prove their worth. We’ll find out more at WWDC on June 10.
