The platformer Astro Bot, developed by Japan’s Team Asobi and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, emerged as the Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024. The title triumphed over a strong lineup of competitors, including the roguelike deck-builder Balatro, the action RPG Black Myth: Wukong, the role-playing game Metaphor: ReFantazio (which won Best RPG), and the action-packed Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
The award was presented by Baldur’s Gate 3 director Swen Vincke, who expressed how winning the top prize at last year’s ceremony had been life-changing. This year, Baldur’s Gate 3 received recognition for Best Community Support.
Team Asobi’s leader Nicolas Doucet thanked his development team and PlayStation for believing in Astro Bot. In his acceptance speech, Doucet fondly recalled playing Super Mario Bros. as a child, crediting Nintendo for inspiring his creative journey, while also honouring PlayStation’s 30-year legacy that influenced Astro Bot’s gameplay.
In total, the platformer received four awards, including recognition as the best in the categories “Best Director,” “Best Action/Adventure,” and “Best Family Game.” Additionally, it received a couple of other nominations. Among the other successful games are the already mentioned Metaphor: ReFantazio, which won awards for the best plot and best art direction, and Balatro, which won the awards for the best indie game, the best indie debut, and the best mobile game. Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth won the award for best music.
Frostpunk 2 was recognized as the best strategy/simulator, and EA FC 25 was named the best sports game. League of Legends was recognized as the best eSports game, and Faker was named the best eSports player.
In addition to the winners, the Game Awards ceremony showcased a traditional lineup of trailers. Moreover, the unexpected sequel to Okami made its debut, much to the delight of fans. Lastly, Naughty Dog unveiled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, a completely new IP.
