After months of waiting, Jack Dorsey’s Bluesky is now open to all and no longer requires an invitation. This social media platform is here to take on X formerly known as Twitter in their approach to content. It launched back in 2021 and only started getting tons of attention last year after it started rolling out invites to users to join the microblogging platform and share their ideas with others.
Now, netizens will no longer need to seek an invitation to be able to use the Bluesky app on any platform. All they need to do now is create an account or sign into their existing account to gain access to the platform. The nature of this social media platform is what stands it out from the crowd of microblogging platforms that are currently in use by millions.
Bluesky’s secret ingredient is that, unlike other platforms in its field, it is a decentralized platform. This means that it puts transparency on what it’s building and what changes are coming to the platform at its forefront. Being decentralized, this platform also allows others to effect changes to the platform as well to suit their needs, quite similar to one of the competing platforms.
Mastodon is also a decentralized microblogging platform that currently has over 1.8 million monthly active users. For now, Bluesky boasts of 1.6 million monthly active users with 3 million registrations during its invite-only era. This puts it up against Mastodon and now that the platform is open to all users and no longer gives users access based on invites, the Jack Dorsey-funded app might see more growth.
Well, the main competition for Bluesky isn’t Mastodon but Threads and X, which are currently the biggest players in this field. Will this microblogging platform be able to compete with these rival platforms? Will its decentralized nature draw more users over to its side? We’ll keep an eye on the progress of this platform to see its growth over the coming months.
