The UK government deadline to remove Huawei technology from telecom core networks has passed, and the BT network provider is falling behind expectations. For this reason, the firm might face some serious charges from the UK government’s requirement on this matter. However, there are currently no statements on this fine, but there is a possibility that the telecom provider might get fined.
On its part, the BT network provider has been making serious moves to get rid of Huawei’s technology in their core network. The firm estimates a total of 500 million Euros spent to remove Huawei technology from their core network last year. This huge amount proves that this isn’t an easy task, and BT is not against complying with the UK government’s requirements on this issue.
Last year alone, the firm moved over to the usage of Ericsson technology on its core network. This switch includes the purchase of new technology from Ericsson and the removal of all Huawei technology. The action requires a lot of resources to complete, hence the failure to meet the government-set deadline of 31st December 2023.
Other telecom providers in the region don’t use as much Huawei technology in their core network as BT. Additionally, BT is the top network provider in the region, hence covering a wider area than other firms in the region. So far, BT network providers have successfully reduced the amount of Huawei technology in their core network.
However, they have failed to remove these parts in compliance with the government’s requirements. Now, the question on the mind of many will be whether the government will proceed to slam a 100,000 Euros daily fine on the network provider. More details on this will unfold in the coming days as BT continues making efforts to remove Huawei technology from its core network.
