Hackers Spread Malware Allegedly on Behalf of Security Service of Ukraine

-

Today, on August 12, Ukraine’s Governmental Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-UA) detected a widespread distribution of emails containing malicious software. These emails appear to be sent on behalf of the Security Service of Ukraine, but they have no connection to the SBU. Instead, they are being sent by hackers attempting to gain access to your data.

The emails from the attackers contain a link to download a file named “Documents.zip.” However, clicking on the link will actually initiate the download of an MSI file, and opening it will trigger the installation of the malicious program ANONVNC. This software enables the attackers to gain hidden, unauthorized access to the victim’s computer.

According to the press service of the State Special Communications Service, CERT-UA has already identified over 100 infected computers, including those within government agencies and local authorities.

“CERT-UA has taken urgent measures to reduce the likelihood of the cyber threat materializing,” the statement adds. “We urge everyone to remain particularly vigilant and to contact CERT-UA immediately if any suspicious activity is detected.” For contact, you can use the email [email protected] or call +38 (044) 281-88-25.

This campaign targeted ports and maritime facilities located in the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Researchers believe that the goal of this campaign is espionage and intelligence gathering.
