The Ada-class anti-submarine corvette “Hetman Ivan Mazepa” has set out to sea for another round of sea trials. A video of the trials was posted on the official Facebook page of the Ukrainian Navy.
The one-minute video with a brief caption showcases the corvette from various angles, including a clear view of the helicopter deck. According to the Ada-class design, helicopters can be stationed both on the deck and inside the onboard hangar. For the trials, an SH-60 Seahawk helicopter from the Turkish Navy was used.
The footage also likely captured a torpedo launch test.
The Ukrainian Defense Forces do not have such helicopters in service. However, after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Western partners provided the Ukrainian Navy’s Maritime Aviation with several Sea King helicopters (you can read more about them here). These helicopters are used for pilot search and rescue operations, evacuation of the wounded, troop transport, and equipment delivery.
These are not the first sea trials for the corvette. Earlier this summer, the Ukrainian Navy Command shared a video showing the corvette leaving the dock and heading out to sea. During these trials, specialists tested the ship’s systems, evaluating how they perform under various loads and operational conditions.
“Hetman Ivan Mazepa” is set to become the future flagship of the Ukrainian Navy. It is expected to replace the frigate “Hetman Sahaidachny,” which had to be scuttled at the onset of the full-scale invasion to prevent it from being captured by Russian forces.
