Experts have examined several guided rocket projectiles from the Tornado-S multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) used by Russia against Ukraine. According to Ukrainian intelligence representatives, these projectiles contain multiple foreign components. This information has been documented on the War & Sanctions portal, specifically in the “Components in the Aggressor’s Weapons” section.

According to intelligence reports, the Tornado-S projectiles contain a combination of two fiber-optic gyroscopes: the TIUS500, produced by the Russian company Optolink, and a foreign-made component without a manufacturer’s marking. This unidentified component has indicator seals with Chinese inscriptions and bears a visual resemblance to AgileLight gyroscopes manufactured by the Chinese company BWSENSING.

The simultaneous use of two gyroscopes is intended to enhance targeting accuracy by providing two independent data sets on the projectile’s spatial position. Reports indicate that both the foreign and Russian components share a similar design, consisting of three Sagnac ring interferometers aligned along three orthogonal axes, along with associated electronic circuit boards.

The electronics in the Russian unit are built around an Altera Cyclone FPGA (USA), while the foreign unit is based on an STMicroelectronics microcontroller (Switzerland). The Russian module also includes several other components of foreign origin:

  • USA: Analog Devices, National Semiconductor, Maxim Integrated
  • China: Panwoo Equipment Consulting, Mornsun
  • Switzerland: STMicroelectronics
  • United Kingdom: Golledge Electronics.

The full list of components, along with their photos, is now available on the War & Sanctions portal. Currently, the platform hosts data on over 18,000 objects and entities across ten categories.

Recently, we reported that a new section has been added to the portal, which will be regularly updated with information on Russian manufacturers of weapons and military equipment. The first category focuses on companies involved in drone production. This section includes identification details of these enterprises, descriptions of their activities, lists of affiliated companies, and the range of unmanned aerial vehicles they produce.
