As we step into 2024, we might see new chips that will enter production under the Intel Foundry Services (IFS) business. This new part of Intel’s operation will oversee the manufacturing process of chips that the firm produces for sale and usage. Chips that this business will produce will be in use on coming laptops, PCs, and AOI monitors.
Reports that the Intel Foundry Services dismantles any previous claims that Intel will contract its chip manufacturing business to other firms. In a recent speech, Pat Gelsinge, Intel’s Chief Executive, clearly states that his firm has no intention to let other firms handle the manufacturing of their in-house designed chips. Future chips that the brand has in the pipeline will undergo their manufacturing process in-house with little reliance on external manufacturers.
In the meantime, Intel Foundry Services will operate within Intel’s business. This will give the company the ability not only to save costs but also to better tailor their products to suit their business needs. Under this one, Intel will operate its chip design business and factory unit side by side.
With the Intel Foundry Services in place, the firm will start making more moves towards AI features. By operating both its chip design business and factory unit together, Intel will be able to get more meaningful work done. Possibly in the coming years, Intel might also spin off its manufacturing business and focus more on chip designing.
