iPhone 17 may get a 24 MP front camera

-

While the iPhone 16 won’t be released until later this year, there are already rumours for the iPhone 17 as well, with leaker Ming-Chi Kuo today reporting that front-facing camera specs are one of the upgrades to expect in next year’s iPhone 17 line-up.

Kuo said in his blog that Genius is the main lens supplier for the iPhone’s front-facing camera, and it can expect to see an increase in revenue thanks to the higher specification of the iPhone 17’s front-facing camera module. The camera resolution will reportedly increase to 24MP, up from 12 MP in current phone models (and in the future iPhone 16 line).

In addition to the increase in resolution, the quality of the multi-layer illumination of the lenses will also improve. Kuo says the iPhone 17 specification will call for a six-element lens design, compared to the five-element in the iPhone 15 and 16.

According to Kuo, the total cost of the front-facing camera component will more than double. This has significant potential to increase the revenue of the Genius provider.

Confirming previous rumours, the iPhone 16 will also get an updated 48MP ultra-wide-angle camera sensor. It is expected to behave similarly to the 48MP main camera sensor in current iPhone models, where computational photography samples 48MP of information to create a 12 or 24MP final output image.

Kuo says that Genius is also one of the suppliers of the periscope lens in the iPhone 16. The 5x 12MP zoom camera will be included in both iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models this year, which will increase the overall demand for these components.

Genius is also the exclusive supplier of the pancake lenses used in Apple Vision Pro. Suppliers are currently shipping the lenses in bulk to prepare them for the consumer launch, which is expected in February or March. So far, Apple has only promised a launch sometime at the beginning of the year.
