AI is everywhere these days, and while OPPO didn’t share its plans to integrate generative AI when it launched ColorOS 14 late last year, things are changing now. At the Google Cloud Next ’24 event, OPPO announced that it will release Google’s Gemini Ultra 1.0 on OPPO and OnePlus phones in late 2024.
Google introduced Gemini Ultra 1.0 in early 2024, its state-of-the-art AI LLM, which runs the Gemini Advanced chatbot. Google says that the AI LLM is designed to solve “highly complex tasks” and that it understands context to provide useful recommendations and insights.
OPPO says the integration of Gemini Ultra 1.0 will “completely change the way users interact” with its devices. While LLM will be coming to OPPO and OnePlus phones later this year, there’s no word on which phones will get the chatbot – that information will be announced at a later date.
Nicole Zhang, general manager of artificial intelligence products at OPPO and OnePlus, spoke about four key principles that will drive the use of artificial intelligence in phones: “It should be resource efficient, self-learning, perceive the real world, and give users creativity.”
Other than that, not much information is available at this time. OPPO uses its own AndesGPT to implement features like AI Eraser on its phones, and it’s similar to what Google offers with Magic Eraser on the Pixels. It’s clear that the manufacturer is keen to expand its set of AI features on the device, and with Honor going all-in on AI with the Magic Portal, we’ll likely see other Chinese manufacturers implement similar features in the future. Interestingly, all these functions will appear on OnePlus phones.
