Rakuten Viber has announced the launch of a new feature called “Chat Summary” based on AI technology from OpenAI. According to the press release, the new feature analyses 5 to 100 unread messages in a group chat and extracts key points from them, creating a summary in one message.
“From now on, you can not read all the missed correspondence, but find out about its content in the format of a concise summary,” the company said in a message. “Two-thirds of Rakuten Viber users in Ukraine communicate in group chats at least monthly, so this feature should help save time for many Ukrainians.”
The AI-powered feature highlights the most important details that appear in the chat between people and instantly creates a short list of the points discussed. A concise summary of the chat will help users stay up to date without scrolling through dozens of previous messages. Currently, the new feature is only available for group chats, as this is the most popular form of communication among Rakuten Viber users.
It is very easy to use the function. The application will automatically offer to create an additional summary of the conversation that the user missed when he opens a group chat with five or more unread messages.
“We are constantly looking for new ways to make life easier for our users,” said Ofir Eyal, CEO of Rakuten Viber. – To develop this feature, we used the capabilities of generative AI to save users time and make sure that they do not miss any important details of their conversations. Parents discussing school work with the class, friends and family making plans for the weekend – everyone will be able to quickly get a report of what they may have missed in the chats.”
The company says that the function is currently at the testing stage, involving 10% of iOS and Android users in Ukraine and other countries: the USA, Japan, Bulgaria, Poland, and the Philippines. At most, the new function will support more than half a hundred languages, including Ukrainian.
I will remind you that we recently wrote that Rakuten Viber presented data on blocking telephone fraudsters and spammers in Ukraine in 2022 and 2023. The company said that in 2022, 130,000 accounts of telephone fraudsters and spammers were blocked in Ukraine. But with the help of improved internal tools for behavioural assessment and AI in 2023, the number of fraud reports decreased several times, because already 37 thousand accounts were sent for blocking.
