The Rakuten Viber team conducted a large-scale survey among Ukrainian users to find out whether they pay for online services—and if so, which ones. According to the company’s press service, more than 5,000 respondents took part in the poll. The results show that over a quarter of those surveyed use paid online services. The data also highlights which services users most commonly pay for and how much they typically spend.
According to the company’s press service, 28% of respondents currently pay for online services and plan to continue doing so. Another 13% said they used to pay for such services but have since stopped. Meanwhile, 59% reported that they have never paid for online services and do not use any at the moment.
Which paid online services are most interesting to Ukrainians? The top three categories were movies and video, games, and music. Nearly half of the respondents selected “Movies and video” as their preferred option. Overall, the ranking of popular categories (with users allowed to choose multiple options) looks like this:
- Films and videos – 45%
- Games – 36%
- Music – 35%
- Learning – 30%
- Apps for work – 20%
- Books – 17%
- Other (your choice) – 16%
- Communication apps and messengers – 15%
- Taxes – 8%
- Dating – 7%.
The survey also indicates that over half of Ukrainian respondents (53%) have never downloaded music or movies from pirated websites or torrent platforms. However, 47% admitted to having done so at some point. As for spending habits, the team asked how much users typically spend on online services each month. The responses were broken down as follows:
- 100-400 UAH per month – 47%
- Over 400 UAH is spent by 29%
- Less than 100 UAH – 24%.
As with previous studies, the team conducted an anonymous online survey, gathering responses from over 5,000 participants. The primary age group consisted of Ukrainians aged 34 to 45, with more than half of all respondents being under the age of 45.
The statistics were compiled using anonymized data based on users’ reactions to messages. Rakuten Viber does not have access to private or group chats or calls, as all communications are protected by default with end-to-end encryption.
