Samsung is developing a cheaper version of the Galaxy Fold 6

Samsung foldable phones have come a long way since their debut. However, despite all the improvements, both phablets are still quite expensive. But new information suggests that Samsung may finally be ready to release a cheaper version of the Galaxy Fold.

According to a report by The Elec, Samsung is focused on increasing its influence in the Chinese foldable smartphone market. To achieve this, the tech giant is reportedly considering a cheaper version of the Galaxy Fold 6, which will hit the market in the second half of 2024.

The goal seems to be to give the Fold a better chance to compete in the market with HONOROPPO and other companies that offer cheaper foldable smartphones. Samsung also believes that reducing the thickness of the Fold will help it take a better position in the competition. As you can see in the comparison chart below, the Fold 5 turned out to be the thickest phone of the bunch.

The publication notes that the uncertainty this year could be an obstacle to the release of a cheaper version of the Fold 6. If the smartphone industry suffers another downturn this year, then, according to the publication, people will shift their focus to premium devices.

If you’re wondering why there’s no mention of a cheaper version of the Flip 6, it’s because Samsung considers the Flip series relatively established. Flip shipments have outpaced Fold shipments, so Samsung is more concerned with increasing sales of its book-style flips.

In 2023, Samsung’s vice president of mobile product marketing, Drew Blackard, said in an interview that he believes the prices of Samsung’s foldable devices will drop over time. However, he also said that the company is currently more focused on improvement than availability. So, if this report is true, it looks like Samsung’s priorities have changed recently.
