Every CES exhibition promises many surprises, and this year’s event was no exception. So, during its First Look presentation, Samsung was able to impress visitors when it demonstrated the world’s first transparent MicroLED display.
While there’s still no word on how much this screen will cost or when the technology will hit retail devices, Samsung showed off not one, but three different transparent MicroLED display(s) with slightly different designs. The two demos had tinted glass, making it easier to ignore any objects that might be behind the panels. The third display turned out to be as transparent as ordinary glass, but at the same time, it had a frameless design.
The effect produced by these displays is difficult to describe, as the content on them looks almost like a hologram floating in the air. All the demo devices stood alone and were only about a centimetre thick, which only enhanced the illusion of a floating screen. Also, thanks to the high pixel density of the micro-LEDs, the images looked incredibly sharp. So far, Samsung has only uploaded one vertical video accompanied by electronic music, but hopefully, it will give an idea of what the South Korean tech giant has in store for the show.
According to Samsung representatives, because transparent MicroLED displays have a higher brightness compared to transparent OLED panels, they are also less affected by ambient light. The bad news is that it will be quite some time before these new displays become even remotely affordable. After all, even opaque Samsung MicroLED TVs are quite expensive, so what can we say about these panels?
