OpenAI has announced the official release of its AI-powered video generator, Sora, now available as part of the ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Pro subscriptions. The subscription to ChatGPT Plus, priced at $20 per month, allows users to generate up to 50 videos in 720p resolution, each lasting up to five seconds. ChatGPT Pro, at $200 per month, offers enhanced capabilities, supporting up to 500 videos with 1080p resolution and durations of up to 20 seconds. The Pro plan also provides users with watermark-free video downloads.

Sora enables users to create videos from text prompts, extend existing clips, merge videos, create loops, and perform various other advanced editing tasks.

The video generator was first introduced on February 15, 2024, as a tool limited to select artists, designers, and filmmakers. OpenAI had initially planned the public release for late 2024. The launch follows a brief controversy on November 26, when an unofficial version of Sora was leaked by unknown parties protesting OpenAI’s internal policies, including claims that artists were not compensated for bug detection and that content approvals required extensive oversight.
