“Novocherkask” (until 2002 “BDK-46”) ​​is a Russian large amphibious ship of the project 775 (775/II) of the Ropucha class. It is designed to land amphibious assaults on an unequipped coast and transfer troops and cargo by sea. It is also capable of transporting various types of armoured vehicles, including tanks.

The Crimean Telegram channel reported that it could deliver Iranian Shahed UAVs, but this has not yet been confirmed. In any case, detonation began after the first explosion, so the ammunition was definitely on board. Residents reported a strong explosion at approximately 03:30. The blast wave blew out windows in houses near the port.

“Novocherkask”‎ was not the first time it came under the crosshairs of the Armed Forces. In March of last year, it was damaged by shelling in the port of Berdyansk. Then several crew members died. As a result of the attack, the ship “Saratov” was also sunk.

Also, on the page of the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, it is reported that from 6:30 p.m. on December 25 to 3:00 a.m. on December 26, 2023, the enemy attacked from the southeastern direction with “Shahed” type UAVs. The launches of 19 “shaheeds” from the districts of Balaklava – Crimea and Primorsko-Akhtars – Russian Federation were recorded. “As a result of anti-aircraft combat, 13 Shahed-136/131 attack UAVs were destroyed by the forces and means of the Air Force and the Defence Forces of Ukraine in Odesa, Kherson, Mykolaiv and Khmelnytskyi regions,” the post says.
