Ukrainian cuisine had long been overlooked by the renowned Michelin Guide, but recently, a Ukrainian restaurant made its debut in the guide. The establishment, named Anelya, is located in Chicago.
This was reported on the official Facebook page of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. According to the post, the restaurant’s owner is chef Johnny Clark, an American with Ukrainian roots. He visited Kharkiv, where his grandmother was born, for the first time last year, and this trip inspired him to open the restaurant. He named it after his grandmother and is now actively promoting both traditional and modern Ukrainian cuisine in the United States.
“In the restaurant, you can taste modern Ukrainian cuisine that blends tradition with contemporary culinary styles. The main dishes include borscht, varenyky, noodles, Poltava dumplings, holubtsi, banosh, pampushky, and more,” the post states. “For dessert, you can order Kyiv cake, ryazhanka, or even a Napoleon cake with black tea cream.”
Additionally, Anelya’s menu features a variety of drinks, including craft cocktails and wines.
However, there is a caveat. As noted by Yevhen Klopotenko, the guide lists the restaurant as “Eastern European,” so “Ukrainians are currently working to have the establishment recognized as Ukrainian.” In his Facebook post, Yevhen mentioned that the chef initially organized a “pop-up with Ukrainian food to collect humanitarian aid for the Kharkiv region. But then Johnny decided to open a full Ukrainian restaurant—which quickly became a success.”
The Michelin Guide is the most renowned and influential of modern restaurant ratings, assessing restaurants and hotels worldwide. It has been published for over 100 years.
