Aula has built a solid reputation for offering budget-friendly keyboards, with models like the F75 earning widespread recognition. Their latest addition to the F-series, the Epomaker x AULA F65, aims to follow in the footsteps of its well-received predecessors. But does this new entry represent an inspired evolution of their lineup, or is it a misstep into less charted territory?

On first glance, the Aula F65 presents itself as a fairly standard mechanical keyboard. It doesn’t stand out visually (not that it doesn’t look snazzy), aside from carrying the Aula name, which is a known mark of quality in this space. While the design itself isn’t groundbreaking, the F65 delivers key features: reliable switches, durable keycaps, and well-tuned stabilizers, all housed in a case that feels sturdier than its price tag might suggest.

It’s worth clarifying the branding, as the full name of the keyboard — Epomaker x Aula F65 — can cause confusion. While Epomaker acts as the distributor here, this is unmistakably an Aula product, designed and produced by the company.

Design

In terms of design, there’s little that distinguishes the F65 from other mechanical keyboards, including Aula’s own models. However, the sample reviewed here stands out for its elegant color scheme: a subtle gradient of grey tones that lends a sophisticated aesthetic. It’s a design that integrates seamlessly into most setups without drawing unnecessary attention. As a Mac user, I appreciate the calm color scheme.

Notably, there are no indicator LEDs or printed symbols cluttering the design. The keyboard features a typing angle of 6.5 degrees and a front height of approximately 20mm. Conveniently, the top edge includes a magnetic slot for the USB receiver, positioned adjacent to the USB port and connection switch.

As a 65% keyboard with 67 keys, the Epomaker x Aula F65 is significantly more compact than a standard full-size layout. Despite its size, the board is versatile enough to accommodate both typing and gaming without compromise. The south-facing RGB lighting offers an understated glow that enhances the visual appeal without dominating your workspace.

The keycaps are durable and designed to withstand long-term use, with resilient legends that won’t fade over time. Combined with responsive stock switches (LEOBOG Greywood V3 — more on them later), the keyboard is functional straight out of the box. For those who enjoy personalization, the hot-swappable design makes replacing keycaps or switches an easy process.

From an auditory perspective, the F65 delivers a satisfying typing experience. The keyboard produces a distinct “clack” that is pleasing without being excessive. This acoustic profile is enhanced by the inclusion of a Flex-cut PC plate, which softens the overall typing feel while maintaining the mechanical keyboard’s signature sound.

The back of the keyboard is minimalist, featuring a simple Aula logo sticker and no adjustable feet. The case design includes outward curves that transition smoothly into the side profile and top, resulting in a subtle floating effect when viewed from the front.

Performance

The unit I reviewed came equipped with the LEOBOG Greywood V3 switches, a budget-friendly linear option that has garnered significant popularity in the Chinese mechanical keyboard community. Known for their thick factory-applied lubrication, the switches are frequently lauded for their unique “thocky” sound profile. Their affordability further cements their status as a favorite. With a total travel distance of 3.6mm and a pre-travel of 1.5mm, these switches offer relatively short actuation. The operating force is 40gf, and the bottom-out force is 50gf, resulting in a light, responsive typing experience.

I also had the opportunity to test the EPOMAKER Wisteria Linear switches as well. These switches impressed with their exceptionally smooth travel and a subtle, mechanically satisfying bounce-back pop. The sound profile is characterized by a controlled, higher-pitched tone.

Users can switch between wired and wireless modes, with the wired connection provided via USB-C. While Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz wireless modes are convenient, the wireless performance falls short for latency-sensitive activities like competitive gaming, where a slight lag is noticeable. For such cases, the wired mode offers significantly better latency, making it suitable for both gaming and typing.

Powering the Aula F65 is a 4000mAh battery, which delivers reasonable performance for its class.

Verdict

While the Epomaker x AULA F65 is a competent addition to Aula’s F-series, it has some shortcomings. The wireless performance, lack of distinctive features like a volume knob, and somewhat lacking software leave it feeling less refined compared to other options in the market. It’s a strong contender among budget keyboards, but not the standout choice in its class.
