In a bid to encourage development, Huawei and Sharp have entered a long-term partnership to help improve internet connectivity. This new partnership is a global patent cross-licensing agreement between the two tech companies and it’ll last for a long time. It aims to boost the research and development processes on both 4G and 5G technology for usage in the real world.
With this agreement in place, both parties will have access to the 4G and 5G patents of each other. Having access to each other’s patents will help them build upon the ideas of both tech firms’ research and development teams. So some patents will not have to wait years before being put into usage on real-world technology, as Huawei and Sharp will have the opportunity to bring their intellectual powers together to build upon these patents.
The announcement of this partnership made its way to the public via the Huawei newsroom. According to Alan Fam, Head of Huawei’s Intellectual Property Department, this partnership “represents mutual recognition of intellectual property of two standard contributors.” It aims to develop advanced technical standards that’ll help enhance user experience while reducing device and service costs.
Mototaka Taneya, the Executive Managing Officer, Chief Technical Officer, and Head of R&D at Sharp also had a thing or two to chip in regarding the new cross-licensing agreement. In his words, the agreement “reflects that both parties respect the high value of each intellectual property.” In the coming years, netizens will get to see the advancements in connectivity technology that this partnership between Huawei and Sharp will produce.
