Meta Unveils AI-Powered Video Generator ‘Movie Gen’, Rivals OpenAI’s Sora

Meta has announced the launch of Movie Gen, a cutting-edge AI-powered video generator capable of producing high-definition footage complete with sound. The announcement follows the recent unveiling of competitor OpenAI’s text-to-video model, Sora. While Movie Gen won’t be available to the public just yet, the technology showcases Meta’s push into AI-driven video creation.

Movie Gen enables users to generate videos from text inputs, edit existing footage, or even transform still images into dynamic clips. The tool automatically generates matching audio, including ambient sounds, effects, and background music, to accompany the visuals, according to a report by The New York Times. The videos can be rendered in various aspect ratios, adding flexibility to the content creation process.

In one demonstration by Meta, a still headshot of a woman was transformed into a video of her sitting in a pumpkin patch, sipping a drink. Meta also highlighted how Movie Gen can modify existing videos, changing backgrounds, styles, or even adding entirely new elements. For instance, a simple animation of a runner was edited to depict the character holding pompoms, running through a desert, or wearing a dinosaur costume — all directed by text prompts.

With both Meta and OpenAI making strides in AI-driven video technologies, the competition in this field is heating up, promising further advancements in how users interact with digital content creation.
