It may be a little early to talk about the next generation of Apple Watch competitors from Google (the Pixel Watch 3 smartwatch). The company’s last smartwatch, the Pixel Watch 2, has only been around for a little over three months, and at least for now, there’s no reason to expect the Pixel Watch 3 to launch before October 2024. But this does not cancel the interesting rumours that may swirl around the upcoming new product.
According to a report by 9To5Google, obtained thanks to a reliable “source familiar with the matter”, the next generation of Google smartwatches will receive a significant change – in the fall, these devices will most likely come in not one, but two sizes. This solution will make the gadgets more versatile compared to the 41 mm Pixel Watch 2 and the first generation Pixel Watch.
This is far from an unexpected “update”, which will put Google in line with many of its competitors, from Apple to Samsung and even Garmin. What will certainly be interesting to see is whether the tech giant intends to keep the 41mm case size, or whether the Pixel Watch 3 will arrive in a case with an even smaller diameter.
For example, the Apple Watch Series 9 comes in 41 and 45 mm sizes, while the Samsung Galaxy Watch6 is a little more compact and offers 40 and 44 mm cases (here, by the way, you can find a review of the Galaxy Watch6 Classic). The Pixel Watch 2, which only exists in one size, is thicker than all of the above devices, but if Google manages to increase the diameter of the Pixel Watch 3, it will allow the company to squeeze a larger battery into a thinner body.
These rumours can certainly please. After all, we can assume that Google is satisfied with the overall performance and user experience of its latest smartwatches and now wants to focus on design improvements that may have seemed less important before but could be of huge importance to Galaxy Watch and Apple Watch owners who would potentially want to change the device and switch to a smartwatch of another brand.
