On March 24, a message appeared on the official page of the Strategic Committee of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Facebook that the Defence Forces of Ukraine had hit large amphibious ships “Yamal” and “Azov”. There were no details, but today on the official website of the GUR they reported a little more details about the damage to one of these ships – the Yamal.
“On March 23, 2024, in the temporarily occupied Crimea, there was a successful attack by fire on the facilities of the Black Sea fleet of the aggressor state of Russia, – says the message of the State Administration of Ukraine. – In particular, the 13th ship repair plant of the Russian Federation in Sevastopol was attacked, where, among other things, the large enemy amphibious ship “Yamal” was moored.
The military intelligence of Ukraine assessed the damage, and according to it, the nature of the damage to the amphibious assault ship “Yamal” is critical. Due to a hole in the upper deck, the ship rolled to starboard. The Russian occupiers have to continuously pump water out of the stricken ship. The GUR added that “Yamal” took part in the annexation of Crimea, and from 2017 to 2023 it was under repair.
Currently, experts are clarifying other details about the losses of the aggressor as a result of the missile attack of the Security and Defence Forces of Ukraine against the military facilities of terrorist Russia. In the same message to the Strategic Committee of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, it was said that not only two large amphibious ships were hit, but also “the communications centre, as well as several infrastructure facilities of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in the temporarily occupied Sevastopol.”

“Yamal” and “Azov” are large amphibious ships of the 775 project and are part of the 197th brigade of amphibious ships of the Black Sea Fleet of Russia. “Yamal” entered the fleet in 1988. It has a length of over 110 m, a crew of 87, and anti-aircraft and missile armament – four launchers of MANPADS “Strila-2” and a launcher “Grad-M”. Azov entered the fleet 2 years later, and its armament includes AK-176 and AK-630 artillery mounts, as well as the Grad-M salvo fire system.
We will remind you that recently we wrote that fighters of the special unit of the GUR of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine Group 13 attacked the patrol ship of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation “Cergei Kotov”. Magura V5 naval drones were used for the attack.
