On the night of March 4-5, 2024, the special unit of the GUR of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine Group 13 attacked the patrol ship of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation “Sergei Kotov”.
As reported on the official website of the Main Directorate of Intelligence, the mission was carried out in cooperation with the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and with the support of the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine.
Magura V5 naval drones were used for the attack, as a result of which the Russian ship of project 22160 “Sergei Kotov” suffered numerous damages to the stern, right and left sides. It is also added that the ship was damaged by fire in the territorial waters of Ukraine, not far from the Kerch Strait.
It is worth noting that the sunken Russian ship is worth about $65 million. Furthermore, it was a new “toy” – the fourth corvette from the series of patrol ships of the project 22160 type “Vasyl Bykov” was laid down in 2016, and at the end of 2021 it went to the Black Sea to conduct factory running tests. Around then, it was planned to be transferred to the Russian Navy, but in the end, it entered into service only in May 2022, and in a couple of months it was accepted into the combat composition of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Navy.
Currently, three ships of this type remain in service – “Vasyl Bykov”, “Dmytro Rohachev” and “Pavlo Derzhavin”. This is a series of patrol ships (corvettes) of the 3rd rank with guided missile weapons of the near and far sea zone, which in terms of characteristics and tasks are close to similar multifunctional offshore patrol ships that have recently become popular in many navies of the world.
We will remind you that we recently wrote that the GUR of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, in cooperation with all components of the Security and Defence Forces of Ukraine, destroyed the large landing ship “Caesar Kunikov” , which was part of the Black Sea Fleet of Russia. This mission was also carried out by Group 13 special forces using Magura V5 maritime attack drones. It is worth mentioning how effective it was.
