The RC-135W Rivet Joint electronic intelligence aircraft operated by the Royal Air Force conducted a patrol flight around Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave. The aircraft, bearing the serial number ZZ664 and callsign RRR7207, returned to RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire on Friday, August 7, after flying over the North Sea and entering the Baltic Sea region.
Such sorties are part of ongoing joint intelligence-gathering missions conducted by NATO allies along the alliance’s eastern flank. The United Kingdom has carried out this type of patrol for many years, maintaining continuous surveillance of Russian military activity long before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
RC-135W Rivet Joint missions are deliberately conducted openly, and their flight paths can be easily tracked through civilian flight-monitoring services. This provides transparency regarding the aircraft’s presence and allows observers to document the frequency of such operations in the region. Although British intelligence activity over the Baltic Sea has always been systematic, the intensity of these missions has increased noticeably amid the ongoing armed conflict in Ukraine. At the same time, US reconnaissance aircraft also operate in the area as part of coordinated NATO efforts to gather intelligence and strengthen deterrence.
Kaliningrad remains one of the most closely monitored areas in Europe. The exclave is located between Poland and Lithuania and has no land connection to the rest of Russia. Baltiysk is home to the headquarters of the Russian Baltic Fleet, while the air-defense and missile-defense systems deployed there are capable of covering a significant portion of NATO airspace. The Suwałki Corridor also runs nearby – a section of the Polish-Lithuanian border that separates the exclave from Belarus and serves as the only land route connecting the Baltic states with the rest of the alliance.
According to official information published on the Royal Air Force website, the RC-135W Rivet Joint is a specialized electronic intelligence aircraft used across all operational theaters to conduct strategic- and tactical-level missions. Its sensor systems intercept and analyze electromagnetic emissions from communications systems, radar stations, and other electronic systems.
Multidisciplinary specialists operate aboard the RC-135W Rivet Joint, including officers and weapon systems operators. Their role is to examine specific segments of the electromagnetic spectrum in order to obtain actionable intelligence for military command.
The Royal Air Force notes that this type of aircraft has been actively involved in Operation Shader, as well as other operational missions. It was previously given the official name Airseeker, although within military circles it is almost always referred to as the RC-135W Rivet Joint. The United Kingdom currently operates three of these aircraft.
