One of my main criteria for evaluating wireless headphones has always been battery life. Because they usually sound 3-4 out of 5, and I always want to use them for as long as possible. However – my evaluations usually also include the understanding that there is a product “for no one at all” – and there is a product just not for me. The Canyon DoubleBee GTWS-2 is one of the latter.
This is a great wireless headset that, oddly enough, is one of the best in its class. It is absolutely not for me, but at the same time I highly recommend it to you – if not to buy it, at least to consider it as an option.
Target audience and price
It’s a gaming headset. And not just a gaming headset, but a gaming headset for smartphones. That is, its target audience is mainly children and teenagers. In fact, I am preparing material on how to turn a smartphone into a gaming console. That is, the idea itself, the direction of the work itself, is absolutely worthy of attention.
You may say that buying a headset only for playing games on a smartphone is not very reasonable. But at $24, it’s one of the cheapest branded TWS headsets I’ve ever seen. Not the cheapest, but very affordable.
Design
It’s also one of the most stylish headsets I’ve ever seen. Headsets with aggressive design in general are not new, but here and specifically for an audience younger than me, this is a really smart move. Canyon DoubleBee GTWS-2 has three colours, and black is the least interesting of them. There are also metallic yellow and orange.
In general, the headset resembles Canyon TWS-6, the review will be somewhere here. That is, it is not in-channel, which gives worse sound isolation, but at least not worse acoustics. Well, and a call from a break or a couple will be much harder to miss with this format.
Controls and features
The controls here are touch-sensitive – and there is a backlight that stays on. And if you’re buying a headset for a student or schoolchild and want to see when they’re wearing headphones, this is it!
Bluetooth 5.3 is here, which in combination with the gaming mode guarantees a latency of only 45ms. For comparison, some of my headsets had ten times more, so it was very noticeable. Only cyber sportsmen will probably notice 45 ms, but they won’t buy a headset for 899 UAH. And for beginners or just casual gamers, like me, it’s the top at all.
Yes, my days of Battlefield 2 cyber sports are over. And on Android, you can play Don’t Starve, Terraria, Minecraft, Titan Quest, Vampire Survivors, Dead Cells. Plus, Asphalt 9 supports keyboard play! In other words, don’t underestimate mobile games. Especially if you have a gamepad.
And in each of these games Canyon DoubleBee GTWS-2 sounds very cool. The three-dimensional scene here is almost flawless. Which is a merit not so much of Canyon, but of the audio chip with Bluetooth modern version. But still the result is 100% satisfactory.
Battery life
The battery life here is four hours tops. You were definitely expecting something like that, otherwise I wouldn’t have mentioned it in the beginning. But even here I see it not as a disadvantage, but as an advantage. Well, because how much can you, even in theory, sit through playing Minecraft or Titan Quest on a smartphone? And even more so, how long will you let your child sit?
I’m thinking an hour and a half or two hours, tops. And he certainly won’t be able to play all night. He might want to, but he won’t be able to. With sound, I mean. Well, the Canyon DoubleBee GTWS-2 takes an hour to fully charge, so it will give your child time to fall asleep.
Summary
This headset would be suitable as a gift for a student or schoolboy. It’s a fairly inexpensive gift, but it’s versatile, themed, and more often useful than not. Even I, in theory, if I want to cut myself off from my PC completely, can keep this headset separate, and switch to it when I’m gaming on a separate monitor from my smartphone. Yes, the Canyon DoubleBee GTWS-2 are not universal headphones. But that doesn’t make them bad.
