Apple unveiled the next-generation iPadOS at its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC). The developers are already able to get beta versions of the new OS, but the release of iPadOS 16 for the general public will take place only in the fall, as usual, and around the time when the new iPhone is released.
iPadOS 16 will, of course, run on the latest iPad models, but what if you’re still using an older tablet?
Apple iPadOS 15
When Apple released iPadOS 15, it was compatible with all the iPads that supported iPadOS 14. Here’s a complete list of devices:
- iPad Pro 12,9″ (all models)
- iPad Pro 11″ (all models)
- iPad Pro 10,5″
- iPad Pro 9,7″
- iPad (5th generation and later)
- iPad mini (4th generation and later)
- iPad Air (2nd generation and later)
Apple iPadOS 16
Unfortunately, some older iPad models were not included in the list this time, which is understandable. Here is a complete list of supported iPads for iPadOS 16:
- iPad Pro 12,9″ (all models)
- iPad Pro 11″ (all models)
- iPad Pro 10,5″
- iPad Pro 9,7″
- iPad Air (3rd generation and later)
- iPad (5th generation and later)
- iPad mini (5th generation and later)
As you can see, notable reductions are the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4.
What’s also interesting, is iPhone models with A9 and A10 Bionic SoCs (iPhone 6s/6s Plus, iPhone 7/7 Plus) are notably absent from the iOS 16 compatibility list. While iPadOS still supports iPad generations 5th to 7th, which were based on A9 and A10 Bionic
I hope that your iPad is on the list of supported devices, and this fall you can enjoy the iPadOS 16 and all its benefits.
