Wargroove 2 doesn’t try to reinvent the turn-based strategy wheel, and that’s probably for the best. The sequel to Chucklefish’s 2019 indie hit arrives on the iPad as a confident, content-rich package that knows exactly what it is: a brilliant love letter to the days of Advance Wars, now perfectly suited for your tablet. It’s a game that feels both nostalgic and fresh, and while it plays it safe in some areas, the sheer amount of quality strategy on offer here is hard to ignore.

The core of Wargroove 2 remains unchanged. You’ll still be commanding armies, capturing villages, and using your commander’s unique “Groove” ability to turn the tide of battle. The rock-paper-scissors nature of its unit matchups is as satisfying as ever, and the pixel-art aesthetic is still a joy to behold. But this isn’t just a rehash of the first game. The introduction of a new faction, the scholarly, mouse-like Faahri, and a handful of new units adds a new layer of strategic depth. The biggest change, however, comes in the form of a two-tiered Groove system. Now, you can unleash a standard Groove or charge it up for a more powerful, tide-turning ability. It’s a small change, but one that adds a surprising amount of tactical consideration to each match.

The story, which is split into three interwoven campaigns, is a bit of a mixed bag. It’s ambitious, telling a more morally complex tale than the first game, but it lacks the cohesive focus of its predecessor. The narrative jumps between different factions and characters, and while the writing is charming, it can feel a bit disjointed. It’s not a deal-breaker by any means, but it’s a step back from the more straightforward and engaging story of the original.

Wargroove 2

Where Wargroove 2 truly shines is in its new “Conquest” mode. This roguelike-inspired addition is a game-changer, offering a series of short, intense battles that are perfect for on-the-go play. You’ll choose a commander and a starting army, and then navigate a map filled with battles, shops, and random events. Your units and health carry over between fights, so every decision matters. It’s a challenging and incredibly addictive mode that adds a huge amount of replayability to the package. For many, this will be the main draw, and it’s a fantastic addition that feels right at home on the iPad.
