Microsoft has announced the launch of an innovative mechanism called Cloud-Initiated Driver Recovery. This new technology solution provides a proactive rollback to previous versions of drivers in cases where software delivered through Windows Update is found to be defective. Now, if internal analysis in the assessment center reveals quality issues with a particular driver, Microsoft has the ability to remotely activate the recovery process directly from the cloud.
This approach allows you to replace the problematic software on healthy devices automatically, which completely eliminates the need for manual intervention by the computer owner or hardware company. It’s important to note that this information is primarily aimed at Microsoft partners who publish their drivers through the Hardware Dev Center portal.
Thanks to the introduction of Cloud-Initiated Driver Recovery, Microsoft specialists can now initiate recovery activities directly through the HDC Driver Shiproom toolkit. The process involves automatic rollback to the latest confirmed stable version through standard Windows Update channels, made possible by synchronized upgrades to the PnP driver stack and flight management and driver publishing services.

The key aspects of the new system include the following. The recovery procedure is launched by Microsoft in cases when a driver publication request is rejected due to non-compliance with quality standards during the Shiproom check. As a result of the operation, the incorrect driver is replaced with the one that was installed earlier or with the next most appropriate version available in the Windows Update catalog. However, the cloud update will not be applied to devices for which the database cannot find a driver version officially approved by Driver Shiproom. The update itself is delivered through the existing Windows Update capabilities, so partners do not need to implement new tools or install additional client agents on users’ computers. The entire recovery cycle from start to finish is controlled by Microsoft, which frees partners from any additional obligations in this process.

For Microsoft partners, these innovations mean that there is no need for any independent actions, as Cloud-Initiated Driver Recovery is a fully managed function. Manufacturers will be notified through the usual Shiproom communication channels if their product is rejected during the testing phase or during the gradual rollout of the update. The recovery process does not affect the developer’s other active drivers or current release schedules. At the same time, partners retain the right and ability to submit corrected versions of the software through standard submission and publication procedures.
