Whenever I get a premium graphics card for testing – such as the ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5080 16GB OC – I find myself asking the same question: what exactly does it offer to justify the premium over lower-end or more straightforward models? To put your mind at ease right away, the premium is certainly noticeable, but the card also looks exactly as you would expect a flagship product to look. That said, we’ll get to the design in a moment.

Test Bench and Product Positioning
A few words about the test system. It may not be perfectly optimized – the two included Kingston memory modules run at 5600 MT/s – but given current market trends and memory prices, we’ll take what we can get. The rest of the system is as follows:

Testing
Overall, there’s no point in fooling ourselves. The ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5080 16GB OC is a flagship – but specifically within the gaming segment. The flagship RTX 5090 is a different story altogether: it is aimed less at gaming and more at AI workloads, demanding video editing, and complex 3D modeling.
In many respects, the RTX 5080 is quite literally “half” of the RTX 5090. This applies to VRAM capacity, CUDA core count, TOPS performance, the number of ROP units, and power consumption. The main specification where the RTX 5080 comes out ahead is core clock speed.
Yes, the 16 GB of VRAM on the RTX 5080 may look modest compared with the 24 GB found on the RTX 4090 or even the RTX 3090. However, the Blackwell architecture has a few advantages of its own. It is NVIDIA’s first generation designed from the ground up in an era dominated by AI. As a result, you can expect full support for DLSS 4.5 – and eventually DLSS 5 – as we have discussed in detail on several occasions. With 1000 Hz gaming monitors now entering the market, frame generation and upscaling are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. You simply cannot expect those kinds of frame rates from native rasterization performance alone. On the other hand, start with a genuine 250 Hz output and enable 4x frame generation, and you can reach the numbers you are looking for.
Unique Design and Quad-Fan Cooling System
Now, let’s take a closer look at the graphics card itself. The Astral is the largest and heaviest graphics card I have ever handled. It weighs more than 2 kg (despite the fact that the chassis is not entirely metal) and features no fewer than four fans:
- Left
- Right
- Center
- Rear (mounted directly on the back of the PCB)
The rear fan is positioned where most other graphics cards simply have a cutout to allow air to pass through the heatsink. Its speed is synchronized with the central fan. Many users have complained about its excessive noise, and I have to agree: at 100% fan speed, it is genuinely loud. However, at 50%, it runs considerably quieter.
Instead, this design gives the Astral phenomenal thermal performance – arguably among the best of any RTX 5080 variant. Reaching just 70 °C in the FurMark stress test without running the fans at full speed is an impressive result.
GPU Tweak III Software and Power Connector Safety
Fan speeds can be adjusted flexibly using ASUS’s proprietary GPU Tweak III utility. However, that is far from its only feature. GPU Tweak III also includes a monitoring system for the 12V-2×6 power connector – an updated version of 12VHPWR that is prone to overheating and melting when the connection is poor.
If the utility detects unusually high or low current after the card has been installed, it indicates that the power cable is either not fully seated or has developed a short circuit. If you see such a warning, shut down and disconnect the PC immediately, then unplug the cable. Otherwise, you risk losing a $1,500 graphics card.
What GPU Tweak III cannot do, however, is significantly overclock the card. It is already pushed close to its limits out of the box, both in terms of core and memory clocks. This gives it roughly a 6% performance advantage over the base Founders Edition, while most competing models barely reach +5%. Of course, the silicon lottery still applies, but serious overclockers are unlikely to find much headroom here. That said, the RTX 5080 GPU itself can reach 3200 MHz and beyond on air cooling at less than 1 V.
A few nice touches are worth mentioning as well: the PCB features a physical Dual BIOS switch with Quiet and Performance modes, the power connector cutout is conveniently positioned for easy cable connection, and the shroud is finished with custom ARGB lighting.
Drawbacks and Design Considerations
Let’s start with the price. The Astral is the most expensive custom RTX 5080 variant currently available. The manufacturer’s recommended price is $1,500. Then there is the memory capacity. Having 16 GB of VRAM compared with the 24 GB offered by last year’s RTX 4090 is debatable, although thanks to the newer DLSS algorithms, the new card is better equipped for modern games.
Another obvious issue is the card’s weight of almost 3 kg. A support bracket is absolutely essential when installing this “brick”; otherwise, you risk damaging or even breaking the PCIe slot on the motherboard.
There is one more factor to consider: the impact on CPU cooling. In principle, this applies to all high-performance RTX Blackwell cards. The pass-through heatsink does an excellent job of cooling the GPU itself, but it can create a real nightmare for tower-style CPU air coolers, as the hot air is exhausted directly beneath the tower cooler’s fan.
That is why liquid cooling is recommended for RTX 5080-class cards and above. ASUS also offers some excellent AIO solutions, such as the aforementioned Strix SLC IV, which can connect to the Dark Hero motherboard without any additional cables via a dedicated contact adapter.
Conclusion
This is an uncompromising gaming flagship, with the performance to match, enormous weight, premium lighting, and cutting-edge AI technologies. It is not a universal workhorse due to its 16 GB of VRAM, but it performs exceptionally well in games. The card runs remarkably cool and can be quiet as well, provided you spend a couple of minutes fine-tuning the fan profile in GPU Tweak III.
The only significant obstacles to purchasing the ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5080 16GB OC are its high price and the potential conflict between the pass-through airflow design and tower-style CPU air coolers. Keep this in mind when planning your build!
