The Security Service of Ukraine has carried out another special operation in the port of Novorossiysk. For the first time, Ukrainian Sub Sea Baby underwater drones were used to attack a Russian Project 636.3 submarine of the Varshavyanka class, known in NATO classification as the Kilo class. According to available information, the explosion caused critical damage to the submarine, effectively rendering it inoperable.
The submarine was carrying four launch systems for Kalibr cruise missiles, which the Russian Federation has been actively using to strike targets in Ukraine, including civilian infrastructure.

The operation was carried out as a result of coordinated actions by the 13th Main Directorate of the SBU’s Military Counterintelligence, in cooperation with the Ukrainian Navy.
The estimated cost of a Varshavyanka-class submarine is around $400 million. However, given the impact of stringent international sanctions imposed on Russia’s defense industry, the construction of a comparable submarine could now cost the aggressor approximately $500 million. These submarines are also informally referred to as “Black Holes” due to their hull design, which effectively absorbs sound and makes detection by sonar systems more difficult.
It is worth noting that the targeted submarine had been stationed in the port of Novorossiysk following a series of successful attacks by Ukrainian surface drones, Sea Baby. These operations forced Russian ships and submarines to vacate Sevastopol Bay in temporarily occupied Crimea and relocate to more distant naval bases.
