Netflix and Blizzard Entertainment have begun work on an animated series based on the iconic Diablo video game universe. The Diablo franchise is set in the gloomy world of Sanctuary, where humanity finds itself at the center of an age-old conflict between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells.
According to Blizzard’s official statement on this project, the company has spent decades bringing entire universes to life in its games, and is now joining forces with leading creative studios to bring stories to new screens beyond the gaming industry. A new animated series set in the Diablo universe is currently in development with Netflix. Details will be revealed at a later date, but this is just the beginning of large-scale initiatives spanning all of the company’s key franchises.

The first game in the Diablo series was released in 1996, so this year marks the 30th anniversary of this action RPG. The most recent release in the franchise to date, Diablo IV, came out in 2023.
Blizzard President Joanna Faris announced the start of production on a Diablo-based TV series during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026, which took place on Saturday at the Anaheim Convention Center. This two-day fan event was the first since Microsoft closed its $69 billion deal to acquire Activision Blizzard in 2023 and was dedicated to the entire Blizzard Entertainment portfolio – from Diablo to World of Warcraft and Overwatch.
As Faris noted in an interview with Variety the day before the event, BlizzCon is, in and of itself, a symbolic event that showcases the outstanding achievements of the entire Blizzard team. She emphasized that the company carefully considered the timing of this announcement, evaluating the relevance of the moment and ways to further build on the organization’s current momentum.
